Atlantis- Should Have Known Better EP 1965

Atlantis was the one of the first beat/pop band in Hungary, formed in 1962, and they released their first EP in 1965. This EP was the first Hungarian beat EP, and this stuff is my favorite! There are 4 songs: 2 English cover songs and 2 instrumental songs. At that time, the beat bands had no own hungarian lyrics songs, every bands played just english cover songs (mainly Beatles songs). Look at the songs: the record starting the famous Lennon-McCartney song, called "I Should Have Known Better" from the awesome Hard Day's Night LP. The original Beatles song released in 1964, so i say: the Eastern European beatniks were not late! The Atlantis cover is a bit funny: slowly than the original Beatles song, and the main instrument is the organ, not the guitar! The singer, Béla Némenyi voice is cool, but you can feel and hear his funny english pronunciation. Why? Because behind the Iron Curtain the bands learned the English songs from the Radio Luxemburg or from the illegal Yugoslavian-copied (Jugoton) western LPs.
The second song called "Hindu Dal" (meaning "Hindu song"), and it was the old Rimskij Korsakov song. Instrumental, but very good! It's nothing special. Lot of band (in West and in East) tried to orchestrate some classical music songs. After all the Shadows also played one song from Mozart.
The 3rd song was the old rock and roll HIT song, the "Shakin' All Over" from Johnny Kid and the Pirates. The original Johnny Kidd song released in 1960, but the band re-released in 1965 too. It's the best song in this EP, because the Atlantis copied this song absolutely good! Their former guitarist , Béla Radics (later about him) playing totally clever, his guitar sound as like as the contemporary western guitar sounds...!
The last song called "Atlantis Rock", they only own instrumental song from this EP. Fast and sounds like late 50s twist, but later (in the middle of the song), the guitar take over the leading part instead of the organ and the bass guitar and will dominate in the song. Absolutely cool!

The band members in 1965:

  • Béla Némenyi-Lead Vocals
  • Béla Radics- Guitar
  • László Sankó - Bass
  • György Rozsnyói- Organ
  • István Pintér- Drums

EP tracklist:

01. Should Have Known Better (Lennon-McCartney)
02.Hindu Dal (Rimskij Korsakov)
03.Shakin' All Over (Johnny Kidd and the Pirates)
04.Atlantis Rock (Atlantis)

  1. Interesting...you don't consider the 1964 EP by Illes with Zsuzsa beat enough then, if you say this is the first Hungarian Beat EP.
I found them very similar with instrumentals and rock and roll covers, Shakin'all over here, Long Tall Sally on the other...true there is a Beatles song but personally I don't find it more Beat than the other!
